(from wiki)
During filming of the first season of Deadliest Catch, the F/V Big Valley sank on January 15, 2005 sometime after 0734 Alaska Standard Time when the Coast Guard first detected its EPIRB signal. Five of the six crew perished; three were never found. Cache Seel was the only survivor. Discovery Channel film crews on the Maverick and Cornelia Marie captured the first footage of the debris field, confirming that the boat had capsized and gone down. During Season 3, a man fell overboard and was quickly saved by a crew mate. The icy Alaskan waters are at freezing temperatures and the human body can last only minutes before going into hypothermia.

Each year, the captains get together and make a friendly wager on who will have more success during the season.
Some of the popular vessels featured:
- Cornelia Marie
- Early Dawn
- Maverick
- Northwestern
- Time Bandit
Sig Hansen seems to be the most popular captain on the show, who also provides consulting to the show and makes the talk show circuit rounds. His brass demeanor and refusal to shake hands with greenhorns attributes to his tough reputation.... and success.
Watch for Sig as he captains the Northwestern ship and competes against the other captains of who can meet their quota for catching king crab.
